The College Admission's Scandal

Public Enemy #1 - March 2019

What has been branded as the "college admissions scandal" has been the talk of the nation this past month.

Actresses Lori Loughlin (Full House) and Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) along with 48 others were charged by the FBI in a nationwide college entrance scam. In Loughlin's case, it is alleged she disguised $500,000 worth of bribes in order to get her two daughters admitted into the University of South Carolina.

Huffman on the other hand, with her husband, William H. Macy (Shameless) allegedly made arrangements to improve her daughter's SAT score 400 points by donating $15,000 to the Key Worldwide Foundation.

The host of other involved parties include college athletics coaches, professors, and investors in order to gain access to universities including Georgetown, Stanford, Yale, USC and UCLA.

The ringleader, according to investigations, is William Rick Singer. Singer with his company, The Key, helped rich high school student cheat on exams as well as conspiring with college athletic officials to admit students as recruits to teams. Singer pleaded guilty to all charges of money laundering conspiracy, racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and obstruction of justice. He could face up to 65 years in prison according to CNN.

This national story finds its footing as the Public Enemy of the month due to all of the prospective students who were not given a fair chance. For many students in America with dreams and aspirations college stands as their only vessel to reach them.

The wealthy lineage of these students involved in the scandal already sets them a leg up in contention for these prestigious universities, so to see them further skate by via the lining of their pockets rather than their own merits is a gross perversion of the "American Dream."
