Starling of the Month - November 2019
The hardened city's civilians rallied together against the overbearing subway system.
Protests have begun and continue to erupt throughout New York City in response to city's police crackdown on subways. Several headlines emerged earlier on in the month after 19-year-old Adrian Napier was stopped at gunpoint by NYPD in response to a report of a male with a gun, according to NBC New York. Napier was found to be unarmed, yet charged with theft of services for fare evasion.
The NYPD was further scrutinized when an incident involving a woman selling churros also caught attention. Inside a Brooklyn subway station the "churro lady," as she was dubbed on social media, was handcuffed and her cart of fried snacks was confiscated by police. According to a city police official, the woman had received several summons over the past six months.
As in the picture above, protesters took to the streets and sub stations in Brooklyn and Harlem (to name a few) in the hundreds. The protesters as a whole receive this designation as Starling of the Month for their grit. Despite the organizing lacking coordination (some protesters were reported to have vandalized public property) the reaction as a whole had honest intent. In a city of millions there can often be so many things to divide one another. When the time came to send a message, city residents pushed back on that idea and stood together.
